Making your own nut milk is easier than you think! After noticing some mystery ingredients on the label of my store-bought organic almond milk, I was inspired to start making it from scratch. It’s easy, creative, fun, and the nut jokes are endless.
- Get healthy with nuts*: maintains healthy heart, lowers blood pressure, strengthens bones, anti-cancerous properties, boosts immune system, improves kidney health, clearer skin. It is also non-mucus forming and easier to digest than dairy. Rich in minerals (ex/calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc), vitamins (ex/vitamin C, B6, E, riboflavin, niacin, folate).
- Know exactly what’s in your milk: Basic nut milks contains only 2 ingredients: organic nuts and purified water.
- Go nuts with different creations: almonds, cashews, walnuts, Brazilian nuts, macadamia nuts, pecans or any combo!
- Sweeten it with nature: organic dates, raw honey, maple syrup, or coconut sugar.
- Explore different flavors: strawberry, chocolate (raw cocao), vanilla bean, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric.
- Use the leftover pulp: create vegan cheeses, spreads, dips, salad dressings, smoothies, or baking.
What to Buy
- Nut Milk Bag. A great nut sac is key to fulfilling your nutmilk dreams! Yeah, I said it 😉 Look for certified organic and eco-friendly. I recommend the Organic Cotton Nut Milk Bag from Organic Family Products. Comes with some great recipes too!
- Glass Pitcher or glass mason jars for storing your nut milk in the fridge. I use Luminarc Quadro Pitcher because it has a secure lid, is easy to clean, and holds 1.7 liters (57oz).
- A Blender. Ok, so we all know the most kickass blender in the world is the Vitamix. I use it 3 times per day! The investment has been worth every penny. You’ll want your blender to grind up the nuts to be as smooth as possible for full flavor.
- Nuts! Any type ~ you will need at least 1 cup of nuts to make a batch. I also love combining different nuts ~ Brazilian + macadamia nuts is a current fav.
Recipe (makes approx. 1.5 litres)
- 2 cups organic, raw nuts
- 8 cups purified water
- (optional) sweeten with nature: 2-4 organic dates, raw honey, maple syrup, or coconut sugar
- (optional) add flavors: organic strawberries, chocolate (raw cocao), vanilla bean, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric
Soak nuts in purified water overnight (at least 8 hours). Drain nuts and add 1 cup of nuts to 4 cups of water to the blender. Use less water if you would like the milk to be thicker. Thoroughly blend until it looks like a smoothie (no chunks). Pour mixture into the nut sac for straining. I usually place a large bowl underneath to catch the milk and will then transfer it to my glass pitcher. You may need to do a little hand squeezing at the end ~ this makes me feel like a farmer 😉
You can add flavors or sweeten your milk with the above recommendations. Set aside the pulp (what is leftover in the sac) for vegan cheeses, spreads, dips, salad dressings, smoothies, or even baking.
I recommend drinking it within 3-5 days since it has no preservatives. Enjoy!!!
